Actually, Santana watches Brittany all the time.
Sometimes it’s sexual, and the blonde loves that. She loves the way her friend’s eyes flash when she dances. It makes her roll her body just a little bit slower. When they make out at parties everyone’s drunk enough to assume the girls are drunk, too; but Brittany has usually spent the entire night on the dance floor, no more than a shot or two deep. It’s just that Santana’s gaze has made her hot, feverish, has given her more of a buzz than any alcohol.
And Brittany loves the light in Santana’s eyes, like they’re reflecting the sunrise, when the girls wake up together, and the brunette climbs on top of her. It’s the only time Brittany would call it making love.
So yes, sometimes it is sexual. More often than not, though, Santana’s just looking out for her best friend. She watches when Brittany attempts to open her locker, gives her two tries before swooping in. She’s always quietly patient when she explains, right-left-right, and opens the locker.
She watches Brittany during Cheerios, as she does handsprings and roundoffs and tumbles. The only time the blonde ever got hurt while cheering, when Jasmine Tayre’s inability to be where she was supposed to be made Brittany roll her ankle, Santana was watching. She even ignored Coach Sylvester’s screaming when she broke formation to be by Brittany’s side. Coach kept yelling as the shorter girl helped her friend off the field. She took her home and gave her ibuprofen and put ice on her foot. They watched Disney movies and cuddled all afternoon. Coach took away their tanning privileges for two months, but neither girl minded one bit.
Santana watches Brittany with boys. She keeps a close eye on who makes the girl smile and who gets too handsy when he’s drunk. Brittany’s easy—she knows that and it doesn’t embarrass her—but that doesn’t mean she always says yes. She remembers one guy who wouldn’t take no for an answer, but Santana was watching then, too. He ended up limping away from the party with a broken nose and a chance he’d never be able to have children.
Santana watches Brittany during their classes. By freshman year, the brunette had intimidated enough teachers that she and the taller girl get to sit next to each other every time they share a class. Santana doesn’t like to tell people, but Brittany knows she’s really smart. She takes good notes and always gets all A’s. She watches Brittany during lectures, though, makes sure she pays attention to the important parts and lets her doodle ducks in the margins of her notebook during tangents, like when Schuester talks about how every student has their own special something inside of them. When Brittany really doesn’t feel like paying attention, important stuff or not, she stops drawing ducks and writes Santana in cursive surrounded by a heart. She writes Mrs. and Mrs. Lopez-Pierce and Mrs. and Mrs. Pierce-Lopez. She draws hearts and stick figures in cheerleading skirts holding hands. Santana still watches her, but those times she always has a blushing smile on her face, and she never makes Brittany stop to pay attention.
